Porto Novo: Water emergency situation the municipality is going through may compromise agricultural projects

Porto Novo, Jun 2 (Inforpress) – Porto Novo, in Santo Antão, is currently facing a water emergency situation, resulting from the three consecutive years of severe drought, which may compromise some agricultural projects in this municipality, one of the most arid in the archipelago.

This is the case of the “Jovens agricultores” (Young farmers) project in Casa de Meio, in the countryside of the municipality, which is in an advanced stage of implementation, but whose success, according to promoters, will depend on the availability of “at least” 75 cubic meters of water / day, for irrigation of seven hectares of land.

Launched in 2018, this project, co-financed by Portuguese cooperation, around 30 million escudos, and has as partners the Government, the City Hall of Porto Novo and the GEF (Global Environment Facility), “is going well”, but the water issue is worrying the promoters of this initiative, which includes 30 young farmers.

The mayor of Porto Novo, Anibal Fonseca, admits that “the critical issue” facing the project has to do, in fact, with the availability of water, because of water emergency situation this municipality is going through, but ensures that “everything is being done” for this project to be “successful”.
