Porto Novo, Jul 19 (Inforpress) – The Ministry of Agriculture and Environment continues to subsidize, in 75 per center (%), the water transport to livestock farmers in Porto Novo, in Santo Antão, one of the municipalities most affected by drought in Cabo Verde.
According to the delegate from this ministry in Porto Novo, Joel Barros, it’s a measure is in force since 2016, within the framework of the emergency plans adopted by the Government to deal with the drought affected the archipelago and affected, in particular, the municipality of Porto Novo, one of the most arid in the country.
However, Inforpress knows the Ministry of Agriculture is currently considering suspending this subsidy to livestock farmers, as Porto Novo is no longer covered by the emergency plans from 2020.
Joel Barros has refused to talk about this possibility, but acknowledges it has been “a huge effort” from the Government to ensure the water transport at “a very low price” to livestock farmers, in this municipality, one of the most extensive, dispersed and with one of the largest livestock in the country (27.000 cattle).
