Porto Novo: Death of animals due to pasture shortage lead livestock farmers to ask for livestock rescue plan

Porto Novo, Sep 26 (Inforpress) – Livestock farmers on the North Plateau in Porto Novo, Santo Antão, today asked the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment (MAA) to launch a livestock rescue plan in this area, where animals are to die for lack of feed.

The livestock farmers appeal comes after recent cases of death of animals have been recorded in this plateau, due to lack of pasture, defending the need for the Government to “think” on livestock rescue plan in Porto Novo, where there’s a prevision of another dry year.

Some livestock farmers, approached by Inforpress, say they face difficulties in acquiring animal feed, and for this reason they would like to MAA to begin supporting them with animal feed, so as to be able to save their animals, at a time when there is no pasture in the fields.

A MAA technician who works in the technical assistance for the livestock farmers in the North Plateau confirmed to Inforpress that there had already been goat deaths in this area,  they were animals that already had a worrisome state.

This technician explained that the rain that occurred in August in the North Plateau did not contribute to the resurgence of the forage species in the North Plateau, where “some grass arose”, only in agricultural lands.
