Porto Novo: Cheese sale remains ‘very weak’ because of COVID-19 pandemic – Livestock farmers

Porto Novo, May 3 (Inforpress) – The livestock farmers in the municipality of Porto Novo, Santo Antão, continue to face difficulties to sell the cheese they produce, due to the new coronavirus pandemic, which stopped tourism, according to their representative.

The Livestock Farmers Association of Porto Novo representative, Romeu Rodrigues, explains that, with the stoppage of tourism in Santo Antão, the sale of cheese “dropped drastically”, since tourist establishments, which remain practically closed, stopped buying this product.

“Our cheese was acquired mainly by restaurants, hotels and other tourist units are practically closed. Without tourism, our market is limited to the entrance to the port of Porto Novo”, states Romeu Rodrigues.

Livestock farmers have taken advantage of the movement of people around the port to try to sell the cheese, according to the association representative, considering the sale has been “very weak”.
