Assomada, Jan 14 (Inforpress) – The Prime Minister said on Thursday that January 13 is much more than a date on which the first free and party elections were held, and defended a democracy based on freedom and dignity of the human person.
Ulisses Correia e Silva spoke at the public act commemorating the Freedom and Democracy Day, which is celebrated today, January 13, which took place under the motto “30 Years of Freedom, Democracy and Development: Gains and Challenges”, which had as its stage the Central Square of Assomada, Santa Catarina, which also counted on the intervention of the mayor, Jassira Monteiro.
“30 years ago, on a day like this, Cabo Verde held its first free and party elections, but January 13 is much more than a date on which the first elections were held. January 13 is an expression of a broad popular movement created in the country and in the diaspora demanding a break with the one-party regime so that the citizens of these islands could have access to democracy, freedom, development, a dream cherished by several generations of Cabo Verdeans”, he said.
The president of the Movement for Democracy (MpD) also considered January 13 as an “expression of the values of freedom”, referring to individual freedom as the primary guarantor of the dignity of the human person, political freedom, economic freedom and equal opportunities.
