Praia, Jul 16  (Inforpress) – Parliament approved Thursday, in the whole and specialty, the fourth amendment to the law establishing the Simplified Scheme of Suspending Employment Contracts (lay-off) provides for the accession of public companies affected by the pandemic.

According to the Minister of Finance, Olavo Correia, this amendment allows public companies which suffer losses above 70 percent (%), compared to 2019, accession the lay-off in force until September 30, but only when duly authorized by the Government Department responsible.

The proposal, however, was approved with favorable votes from the Movement forDemocracy (MpD ruling party)  and the Cabo Verdean Independent Democratic Union (UCID-opposition party), and abstention from the African Independence Party of Cape Verde (PAICV-opposition party).

In justifying the PAICV’s vote of abstention, MP Démis Lobo Almeida said the PAICV is absolutely in favor for extension of the law, allowing the continuity of the measure, which he considers important for mitigating the negative COVID-19 impacts, particularly on companies and, above all, workers.
