PAICV rejoices with unconstitutionality declared by the TC to the powers of US military personnel

Praia, Jul 10 (Inforpress) – The PAICV received “with satisfaction” the unconstitutionality declared by the Constitutional Court (TC) to the article referring to US jurisdictional powers over its military personnel for crimes in Cabo Verde, within the scope of SOFA agreement.

This position was expressed this morning to the press by the Deputy Secretary-General for External Relations and Diaspora, for whom “it is not a victory for the party, but a victory for Cabo Verde”, claiming that the issue is the national sovereignty, the credibility of Cabo Verdean foreign policy and Cabo Verde’s own democratic rule of law.

Francisco Pereira said that for the PAICV this Constitutional Court judgement avoids the violation of national sovereignty, and  as a sovereign country this agreement appears to be a victory for Cabo Verde and Cabo Verdeans.

The Constitutional Court declared the article referring to US jurisdictional powers over its military personnel for crimes they may practice in Cabo Verde, under the Status of Forces Agreement’, in the English acronym SOFA, unconstitutional.
