Operators argue that Cidade Velha as World Heritage should have better conditions

Praia, Jun 26 (Inforpress) – Residents and economic operators in the municipality of Ribeira Grande de Santiago defended Thursday that the Cidade Velha, as a World Heritage Site, should offer better conditions of security, sanitation and accessibility.

On the day that this municipality celebrates the 11th anniversary of the recognition of Cidade Velha by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco) as a World Heritage Site, Inforpress spoke with some residents and operators connected with catering and hospitality.

In the opinion of the resident and also entrepreneur Luciano Semedo, the municipality practically “won nothing with this classification”, that is, the “only thing we won was the title of World Heritage”.

For the same source, the population has not taken advantage of this title and even with tourists visits, they are unable to collect “great revenues”. “Tourists come and don’t even purchase. Here in Penedinha (name of his restaurant) we have contacts that we make through the agencies to offer lunches, on Monday, Thursday and Saturday, for 30 to 40 tourists, but after that we were left with nothing”, he lamented.
