Morna is Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity – Ministry of Culture

Mindelo,  Nov 8 (Inforpress) –  Minister of Culture Abraão Vicente said today that the expert committee of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has approved the Morna dossier for World Heritage.

According to a publication by the Minister of Culture and Creative Industries, the decision will be ratified in December in Colombia, but “the nation can already celebrate because the Morna is already an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.”

The acceptance of the Morna dossier by the technical committee was already expected by expert Paulo Lima, who was part of a team that worked on the preparation of the Morna dossier application for Intangible Heritage of Humanity, delivered at UNESCO headquarters in Paris on March 27 last year.

In an interview with Lusa, the anthropologist revealed that he has received “very positive” echoes about the Morna dossier. In addition to praising the “determinant” role of women in this musical manifestation and citing Cesária Évora as “the face” that turned Morna into a “global thing”, Paulo Lima explained that in its application, they tried to show that Morna “is a a living, communal and reinventing practice that is reinvented every time one reinvents itself. ”
