Minister of Foreign Affairs states that the issue of political and non-political ambassadors should be “played down”

Praia, Sep 18 (Inforpress) – The Minister of Foreign Affairs said that the issue of political and non-political ambassadors should be “played down” because “they are all politicians” and a country chooses its representatives, depending on very objective criteria.

According to Luís Filipe Tavares, Cabo Verde chooses its ambassadors, taking into account the foreign policy objectives in relation to the states where they will represent the country.

“For example, in the case of choosing the ambassador in Washington [United States of America], we have strategic objectives in matters of foreign policy with this country, and engineer José Luís Livramento, who is also a Doctor in Economics, has the right profile”, said the official, stressing that businessman José Pedro de Oliveira, nominated for Brasilia, meets the same requirements.

The head of Cabo Verdean diplomacy made these remarks to the press, Thursday on the sidelines of the inauguration ceremony of the two new ambassadors appointed by the President of the Republic, Jorge Carlos Fonseca, on a proposal from the Government, which, according to Luís Filipe Tavares, it is a “quiet choice and with a lot of responsibility”.
