Mindelo, Jun 18 (Inforpress) – The Minister for the Marine said the Government is working on a mixed model to increase the catch of fish, which involves renewing the fleet of domestic shipowners and regulating the flagling of foreign boats.
Paulo Veiga announced these measures at a press conference today in Mindelo to react on the temporary derogation from the preferential rules of origin granted by the European Union (EU) to Cabo Verde to export fish for another three years.
According to the minister, this will probably be the last derogation granted to the country and the EU is willing to help Cabo Verde find credit for renewing national vessels so that Cabo Verdean shipowners have greater capture capacity and can go beyond the Exclusive Economic Zone (EES).
The aim, according to the minister, is to have a national fleet with the capacity to not ask for a derogation in two and a half years.
