Maio: Thames ship conducts sand dredging test safeguarding environmental protection – DNA

Porto Ingles, May 7 (Inforpress) – The National Directorate of the Environment (DNA) clarified  Thursday that the Thames ship was allowed to test sand dredging equipment in Maio Island, safeguarding all environmental protection requirements.

In a statement, DNA recalls that in recent times there has been a dynamics of construction in Cabo Verde, which has contributed to the scarcity of sand, a situation has forced the search for solutions to address this problem, which involves dredging.

The institution also clarifies that the ports of the country have also run into silting problems, something will only be possible to overcome with the dredging of sand, using such ships, in order to allow normal traffic in port infrastructure.

This measure aims, on the one hand, to control “spontaneous and uncontrolled” exploitation, thus avoiding environmental imbalances, which is why the Government has authorised the Ministry of Maritime Economy to license sand dredging in ports and sandbanks.
