Maio: Fishermen from the village of Calheta demand the installation of an ice machine in that village

Porto Inglês, Sep 28 (Inforpress) – Fishermen from the village of Calheta demand the installation of an ice machine in that location, in order to work with more dignity and reduce the cost of purchasing this product.

As explained by fisherman Joaquim Fernandes Santos, at this moment they are forced to travel to the city of Porto Inglês to purchase this product, which they used to do in the village before, and explained that for each bag they pay six hundred escudos, adding transportation that is more than one thousand escudos and, therefore, are bearing a cost they considered to be high for fishermen.

“When we had our ice machine in operation, we only had to pay 200 escudos for transport between the space where production is carried out to the beach, which is totally different”, he stressed, recalling that the fishing rules in force in the country they demand that fish be kept on ice, from catch to the final consumer.

As he explained, if the fish is not preserved after being caught, especially at this time of year, when it arrives on land it will not have the quality it should normally have, so they are often harmed, as customers refuse to buy because they claim that it may have some health implications.
