Lack of fishing infrastructure and increased boat capacity are major challenges for the sector – director

Praia, Feb 5 (Inforpress) – The Director-General for Marine Resources said today that the fishing sector plays a key role in the national economy and job creation, pointing out, however, the lack of fishing infrastructure and increase of boat capacity are pointed out as the main challenges.

Vera Gominho made these statements to Inforpress in the framework of the commemorations of the National Fisherman Day which is observed today throughout the archipelago, noting that the date should serve as a reflection on the role that fishing associations and fishing communities play, to be able to better develop the fishing sector in Cabo Verde.

According to this official, the fisheries sector as a primary sector of the economy contributes about 2% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), however stressing that it is working to make this contribution even greater than this value.

At the moment, as it has indicated, the sustainability of the fishing resources, infrastructure of the sector, units of ice production and increase of the capacity in terms of the boats are the greater challenges faced by the sector.
