INE president considers “urgent” to bet on the modernization of national statistical systems

Praia,  Nov 19 (Inforpress) – The president of INE defended the need to invest in the modernization of national statistical systems, through new technologies, aiming to maximize the efficiency in the supply of data and statistics in promoting the sustainable development of the African continent .

The president of the National Statistics Institute (INE), Osvaldo Borges, made these statements, Wednesday during his speech at the opening ceremony of the webinar commemorating the African Statistics Day, which this year takes place under the motto “Modernize  national statistics systems to provide data and statistics for the maintenance of peace and sustainable development in Africa”.

This theme, according to this official, aims to sensitize decision makers, technical and financial partners, data producers and the whole society in general about the crucial importance of governance statistics and economic statistics in order to achieve the objectives of an Africa without conflicts.

As he stressed, the COVID-19 pandemic showed the weaknesses of many statistical systems, especially the limitations in the collection of statistical data, stressing that despite government measures to combat the pandemic, this strategy has hampered the timely provision of necessary statistical data for decision making.
