Independence/45 years: President of the Republic points to housing as a guarantee of national and social cohesion

Praia, Jul 6 (Inforpress) – The President of the Republic, Jorge Carlos Fonseca, considered Sunday that “of all the dramas caused by COVID-19”, the one that touched him most was related to housing, “an essential imperative” for the “stability of national and social cohesion”.

“We all recognize the importance of a consistent housing policy that can materialize the constitutional right to decent housing. This implies an adequate land planning, urbanization plans, provision of infrastructured land and support lines, in addition to social housing programmes promoted by the Government and the City Halls”, he said.

The head of state, who was speaking at the National Assembly solemn session on the 45th anniversary of National Independence, added, however, that housing, health, education, employment, a good environment, “are not just State and Municipalities problems”, but which are also the responsibility of “people with some interest”.

In his speech, Jorge Carlos Fonseca argued that taking economic enterprises to the most disadvantaged areas should be a priority, but for that, he stressed, “greater tax benefits and other facilities” should be granted to companies in these areas, thus making a “positive discrimination” regarding competitive advantages in the national context.
