Human Rights: President of a network of defenders says the situation “is good” despite “important challenges”

City of Praia, 14 Sep (Inforpress) – The president of the Cape Verdean Network of Human Rights Defenders stated today, in the city of Praia, that although the human rights situation in Cabo Verde is “favorable”, there are still “significant challenges ” to be faced.

Felisberto Moreira made these statements to journalists on the sidelines of the meeting he held with the President of the Republic, José Maria Neves, to provide information related to the participation of Cape Verdean civil society in the pre-session, as a representative, on the Universal Periodic Review (RPU) which took place in Geneva (Switzerland), from August 29th to September 1st.

The agenda included, among other issues, the situation of human rights in Cape Verde, within the framework of recommendations made by the United Nations Council and the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights.

“We share our perception of the universal periodic review that took place in Geneva and there are some elements that are fundamental for us, firstly, the awareness of civil society on the issue of rights and defenders, a recently created network that aims to work on defense and promotion of rights and human rights defenders, including association leaders, journalists, academics and all those who work to defend causes (…)”, he highlighted.
