HIV-AIDS/Cabo Verde: 98% of infants born to HIV-positive mothers have been born healthy – CCS-AIDS

Praia, Nov 30 (Inforpress) – Cabo Verde expects in mid-2023 to have the certification of the elimination of vertical transmission because of 100 babies exposed to HIV, 98 are being born healthy annually, revealed the head of the Coordination Committee to Combat AIDS.

The executive secretary of the Coordination Committee for the Fight against AIDS (CCS-Sida), Celina Ferreira, made this revelation, in an interview with Inforpress, as part of the celebrations of World AIDS Day, which is observed annually on December 1st.

“We have been facing this epidemic for 35 years, 17 years since the introduction of antiretroviral treatment in Cabo Verde, and 18 years of the Mother-to-child HIV transmission Prevention Program. Right now we are in the elimination phase, because of 100 babies exposed to HIV, 98 are being born healthy each year,” she said.

“We are working in this direction and hope by mid-2023 to have the certification of the elimination of vertical transmission in Cabo Verde. Likewise, we are preparing the country for the elimination of HIV in 2030, which for us is a great challenge,” she added.
