Government welcomes the content of the TC judgement on military agreement with the US and guarantees that it will continue

Praia, Jul 10 (Inforpress) – The Government welcomed the content of the Constitutional Court’s judgement on the military agreement with the US, ensuring that SOFA will remain in effect and the sovereign bodies have been “doing very well in this matter”.

“The agreement will continue in force and the sovereign bodies were very well in this matter”, said the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Communities, Luís Filipe Tavares, in a press conference, this Thursday, in Praia.

According to the minister, the content of the Constitutional Court (TC) judgement on SOFA, “gives practically total satisfaction to the positions adopted by the relevant sovereign bodies in relation to it and rejects all PAICV positions regarding the constitutionality of this important international agreement.”

For Luís Filipe Tavares, “contrary to the conclusions hastily conveyed by some media organizations, which, in practice, conclude in a direction contrary to what results from the judgment (…) it is easily concluded that the only unconstitutionality mentioned refers to a segment of an article, and only occurring if that segment is interpreted in a certain sense – that the immunity from jurisdiction attributed to ‘United States personnel’ would allow the installation of an American martial court in Cabo Verdean territory ”.
