Government commits to implement the National Strategy for Disaster Risk Reduction

Praia, Oct 14 (Inforpress) – The Government today undertook, in Praia, to implement the National Strategy for Disaster Risk Reduction as well as to work for the implementation of the recommendations of the initial assessment of Preparing National to Disaster.

These words of commitment were given by the Minister of Health, Arlindo Rosario, who presided over the presentation of the results of the initial assessment of Preparing National to Disaster, conducted by experts from the Pacific Disaster Center (PDC).

During his speech, the ruler began by explaining some of the characteristics of the country, a small archipelagic Island State, with an active volcano and a record of eruptions, in the line of trajectory of hurricanes and storms, its economic and productive system, its ‘habitats’ and ecosystems are widely exposed and are highly vulnerable to extreme weather conditions and the risks of disasters.

On the other hand, rapid and unplanned urban growth, resulting in the development and occupation of coastal areas and hillsides, further increases the degree of exposure to disaster risks and exacerbates urban poverty, thereby increasing socio-economic vulnerability.
