Praia, Sep 16 (Inforpress) – The PAOK team from Greece, with Cabo Verdean international central defender Fernando Varela as the starting line-up, beat Benfica 2-1 on Wednesday in a game in the third qualifying round of the Champions League.
Fernando Varela made a performance considered safe, in a match in which the Greeks scored in the second half, with goals from Vertonghen (own goal) and Zivkovic, who scored for the former team.
Benfica reduced in the extra time, through Rafa, who had entered during the second part. In the next phase, which gives access to the group stage of the Champions League, PAOK will play against Krasnodar, from Russia, while Benfica falls to the Europa League.
In September last year, Fernando Varela put an end to his international career with the national team of Cabo Verde, after 52 games and three goals scored.
