Fogo: Recognition of Fogo and Maio as biosphere reserves contribute to promote sustainable development – Vitó Project

São Filipe, Oct 29 (Inforpress) – The association for conservation and sustainable use of resources, Vitó Project, considers that the biosphere reserve seal will contribute to the sustainable development of the islands of Fogo and Maio.

The executive director of this non-governmental organization (NGO), Herculano Dinis, stated that the Vitó Project, which was one of the partners in the preparation of the technical proposal concerning the island of Fogo, believes that with the biosphere reserve seal, in addition to greater dissemination of the image, it will serve as a lever and enhancement of the two islands where the issues of sustainable tourism, the environment, the reconciliation of natural resources and the promotion of sustainable development will gain new dynamics.

“As an environmental NGO, we made our contribution, essentially, in the preparation of the technical document was submitted to Unesco and went through a whole process until the final approval”, highlighted Herculano Dinis, recalling that this is the first time this happens despite the process be very old since it had started in the 90’s of the last century.

He referred that it was “with great satisfaction he received the news of the recognition of the biosphere reserve”, stressing that the recognition is the beginning of a new stage, since the main objective of the biosphere reserve is to promote sustainable development, to reconcile the man’s presence with conservation of natural resources and guarantee their livelihood for several generations.
