Extreme and absolute poverty still affect children’s rights in Cabo Verde – UNICEF representative

Mindelo, Jun 2 (Inforpress) – UNICEF representative in Cabo Verde, Steven Ursino, said Wednesday in Mindelo that the extreme and absolute poverty which directly impacts the realization of children’s rights and violence are challenges still persist in the country.

Steven Ursino, the United Nations International Emergency Fund for Children (UNICEF) representative, was speaking at the main event of the World Children’s Day celebrations, June 1, at the Jotamont Academy Auditorium, which was attended by 250 children and adolescents from the island of São Vicente.

According to Steven Ursino, Cabo Verde has already made great progress on child protection, particularly in the field of health, birth registration, education, social protection, efforts to consolidate child-friendly justice, carry out legislative reforms, create more structures for children, among others.

However, he stressed, there are still challenges such as extreme and absolute poverty, which directly impact the realization of the children’s rights and violence against the child, and he argued that we must continue to invest in child protection in Cabo Verde.
