Cidade da Praia, 8 August (Inforpress) – Cardiologist Fernando Tavares said today that poor eating habits and a sedentary lifestyle are the main factors behind the increase in cases of high cholesterol in the country.
Fernando Tavares made this statement during the celebration of World Cholesterol Day, held annually on 8 August with the aim of raising awareness among the population about the importance of preventing and controlling high cholesterol, which is considered a risk factor for the development of various cardiovascular diseases.
According to the specialist, the disease situation in the country is ‘stable,’ but the 40-45 age group has the highest diagnosis rate for this pathology, with a prevalence in men due to alcohol abuse, smoking, a sedentary lifestyle, obesity, and poor diet.
According to this expert, cholesterol is a fatty substance that is essential for the proper functioning of the body, but too much of it can lead to blockages in the arteries of the heart, increasing the risk of heart attacks and strokes.
