Today, Porto Novo celebrates Municipal Day with a formal session of the Municipal Assembly

Porto Novo, Sept. 2 (Inforpress) - Today, Porto Novo celebrates Municipal Day, a municipal holiday that coincides with the 64th anniversary of the municipality’s founding. The municipality covers 558 square kilometers, representing two-thirds of the island of Santo Antão.

The activities marking this symbolic date for the people of Porto Novo began with the music festival at Curraletes Beach, continued with a horse race and a literary reading, and culminated today with a formal session of the Porto Novo Municipal Assembly.

In addition to Municipality Day and the 64th anniversary of this municipality’s founding, September 2 also marks the 21st anniversary of the elevation of the then-town of Porto Novo to city status.

The municipality of Porto Novo was established in 1962 by a ministerial legislative decree published in the Official Gazette of Cabo Verde, No. 35, dated September 2, 1962, and signed by the then Minister of Overseas Affairs, Adriano Moreira.
