The government wants to remove the Orlando Pantera Centre from the prison system and create a new socio-educational facility for young people

Praia, 31 August (Inforpress) – The Minister of Justice announced today in Praia his intention to remove the Orlando Pantera Centre from the prison system and to establish a socio-educational facility dedicated to the education and reintegration of children and young people.

Clóvis Silva expressed this intention in comments to the press following the launch of a training programme organised by the Garah Foundation, aimed at people undergoing treatment for addiction.

At the time, the minister advocated a significant change to the approach to dealing with children aged 12 to 16 who are in conflict with the law. 

“I don’t want children aged between 12 and 16 to be sent to prison. (…) I need a centre that works with children to educate and rehabilitate them, not to keep them locked up and hand them food through an iron door,” said the minister.
