Praia, May 29 (Inforpress) - Maria Ruiz Villar, the representative of the FAO in Cabo Verde, said today in Praia that the community plays a key role in protecting and restoring forests as a way of combating climate change.

The closing of the workshop “South-South Knowledge Exchange on Community Forestry: from West Africa to the World”, held between May 26 and 29, was marked by the presentation of the final declaration which celebrates the advances made by community forests and highlights the essential role of communities in protecting and restoring these vital ecosystems.

In a statement to the press, the representative of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) stressed that the final declaration values the progress made globally in terms of community forests, recognizing the efforts of local communities to conserve forests while improving their living conditions.

“There will be no forests if the communities living in each territory are not involved,” she said.
