São Vicente: Mindelo Fishmongers Association celebrates national day with exchange in Calhau

Mindelo, 16 May (Inforpress) - The Mindelo Fishmongers Association (APM) will celebrate National Fishmongers Day with a class exchange between the four fishing communities of São Vicente on Saturday, 17 May, at the Calhau Community Space.

According to a statement from the APM, the National Fishmongers' Day was officially established by the government in 2024, based on a proposal from the association itself and partner organisations, ’marking a historic moment for all fishmongers in Cabo Verde’

‘It symbolises public recognition of a profession that is essential to food security, the informal economy and the country's cultural identity. A dignified job, with a woman's face, that deserves institutional valorisation and visibility,’ said

According to the same document, National Fishmongers' Day is also “an opportunity to strengthen the collective voice of this working class and give visibility to their main demands”, including “the demand for better working conditions and greater respect for their rights as workers in the maritime economy”.
