Santa Maria, Apr 16 (Inforpress) – Sal island is hosting today the Executive Committee meeting of the Association of National Olympic Committees (ANOC), an event that brings together the leadership of global Olympic sport and marks its return to African soil after 15 years.
The meeting, held in the conference room of one of the city’s hotel units in Santa Maria, is seen by national and sports authorities as a “moment of affirmation” of Cabo Verde’s organizational capacity and an opportunity to strengthen the archipelago’s sports diplomacy.
Speaking to the press, the president of the Cape Verdean Olympic Committee (COC), Filomena Fortes, who is making her debut as a member of this executive committee, stressed that hosting these high-level entities aims to “further integrate” national sport into the international context and demonstrate that the country has the capacity to host major events.
“It is a showcase. We wanted to show that Cabo Verde is on the global stage and that we have the conditions to host any event of this nature. We have here presidents from all continents who organize their assemblies and competitions, and I see no reason why such competitions cannot be brought to Cabo Verde,” said Filomena Fortes.
