President of the Republic urges caution before tightening laws on immigrants from former portuguese colonies

Lisbon, Jun 27 (Inforpress) - The President of the Republic, José Maria Neves, said on Thursday that Portugal should think carefully before tightening immigration or nationality laws for immigrants from former Portuguese colonies.

The head of state was speaking to Portuguese radio station TSF on the sidelines of his visit to the city council of Loulé, Algarve, where he was received and honoured by the Portuguese municipality, and also took part in the MED 2025 Festival, which has Cabo Verde as a guest country.

Although he argued that the democratic decisions of the different countries should be respected, in this particular case Portugal, he insisted that in regards to the former colonies, due to the existing friendly relations, ‘fair and equitable’ laws should be sought.

According to José Maria Neves, there will always be mobility between Portugal and Portuguese-speaking African countries.
