Portugal: Leader of a community association hopes the Government will show “greater dynamism” in its relations with the diaspora

Lisbon, 31 August (Inforpress) – The president of the Association of People from Maio in Portugal (AMP), Carlos Frederico, called for the Cape Verdean Government to pay greater attention to communities in the diaspora, expressing the hope that the new government would bring “a new dynamism” to its relationship with Cape Verdean associations abroad.

The association leader was speaking to Inforpress and RTC on the sidelines of the activities commemorating the 23rd anniversary of AMP, held on Saturday the 29th, on the occasion of the organization's anniversary, founded on August 29, 2003, with the purpose of uniting the people of Maio residing in Portugal, keeping the connection to the island of Maio alive and creating mechanisms of solidarity among the members of the community.

Carlos Frederico criticized the performance in recent years of the government structures responsible for the diaspora, arguing that they have not adequately responded to the needs of Cape Verdean communities abroad.

“The diaspora doesn’t want to be seen merely as a source for sending remittances to Cape Verde. A Ministry of Communities was created and it hasn’t done anything for the diaspora, at least not yet. Perhaps this new government will have a more dynamic approach to the diaspora,” he stated.
