Praia, Jun 02 (Inforpress) – The President of the Republic today expressed solidarity with the informal traders affected by the fire in Ponta Belém during a visit to the site and called for “strong coordination” between the municipality and the Government to support affected merchants.
José Maria Neves was speaking to the press during a visit made this morning to Ponta Belém following the fire that occurred on Sunday, May 31, which destroyed more than 80 per cent of the clothing stalls and affected homes and a building.
According to the Head of State, the purpose of the visit was to express solidarity with the affected individuals and with City Council of Praia, while urging “strong coordination” between the municipality and the Government to provide “a more prompt response” to all those affected.
“There is little value in lamenting incidents after they occur. What is needed now is for the municipality, in coordination with the Government, to find ways of possibly accessing an emergency fund to support people in their recovery,” he stated.
