Praia, Mar 02 (Inforpress) - The Movement for Democracy (MpD) today upheld the principle of the presumption of innocence in the case involving the former mayor of Brava, Francisco Tavares, stressing that the courts are the “independent sovereign arbiter” in a State governed by the rule of law.
At a press conference, the national deputy and member of the MpD National Political Commission, Euclides Silva, stated that the party believes in the word of Francisco Tavares, who declares himself innocent, but emphasized that it is up to the person concerned to prove that condition before the competent authorities.
“Respect for justice, even when one disagrees with a decision handed down, constitutes an essential foundation of the democratic regime. When there is disagreement, the path is always that of respecting the decision and appealing to higher courts,” commented Euclides Silva, highlighting that the principle of the presumption of innocence must be extended to all citizens.
MpD took the opportunity to praise the “serene, peaceful and respectful” stance adopted by the former mayor in the face of the authorities’ actions, considering that his conduct constitutes an example of compliance with judicial decisions.
