Porto Inglês, Jun 25 (Inforpress) - On Tuesday, the Maio Biodiversity Foundation (FMB) inaugurated nurseries and school gardens in Pedro Vaz and Calheta schools, with the aim of reinforcing environmental education, promoting sustainable practices and contributing to pupils' food security.
The initiative is part of an education strategy for sustainable development, providing schools with green spaces that serve as living laboratories for practical teaching about agriculture, biodiversity and climate change.
The plantation is cultivating species such as lettuce, cucumber, pumpkin, sweet potato, papaya, pine nuts and passion fruit, which will be used in school meals, helping to reduce operating costs and guaranteeing healthier food for the pupils.
The coordinator of the FMB's protected areas, Jairson Veiga, emphasised that the project brings students closer to environmental issues, encourages sustainable agricultural practices and creates greater sensitivity to protecting the local ecosystem, while also promoting community involvement.
