Praia, 21 May (Inforpress) - The Cape Verdean women's under-17 handball team, bronze medallists in the Challenge Trophy in Mauritania, today denounced the ‘abandonment, hunger and unacceptable conditions’ to which the team was subjected in this competition.
In an interview with Rádio de Cabo Verde (RCV), Kátia Fortes said that the event, which took place from the 13th to the 17th of this month and in which the country was represented by the U-17 and U-19 women's teams, ended up ‘becoming a real nightmare’ for the young Cape Verdean players who ‘wanted to make this event a dream’.
The coach said that the whole journey was troubled and that the players arrived at their destination very late, which is why both the under-17 and under-19 teams missed the first game due to no-shows, emphasising that the delegation felt abandoned.
He also expressed his regret that, just as on the way in, the departure from Mauritania was also disorganised, with some members resorting to hitchhiking to the airport, including with the police and renting taxis.
