Praia, October 30 (Inforpress) – Fatumalta Baldé, the presidential advisor and activist from Guine for women's and children's rights, stated today that Guinea-Bissau has registered "great progress" in the field of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), particularly at the legislative level.
Fatumalta Baldé was speaking to the press in Praia, on the sidelines of her participation in the workshop "Strengthening to Protect: preventing practices that affect the health, rights and integrity of people".
"Our experience working in Guinea-Bissau led us to achieve great results in terms of legislation regarding the practice and demystifying the notion that this practice is an Islamic obligation or recommendation," the activist emphasized.
Fatumalta Baldé highlighted that, in the awareness-raising work carried out, it was possible to gather, in 2013, at the National People's Assembly, more than 200 imams, Quranic teachers and religious leaders to publicly declare that FGM is not a religious recommendation.
