Calheta, 2 October (Inforpress) – The Minister for Agriculture, Rural Development and Fisheries announced on Thursday measures to address the damage caused by the rains and Storm Gonzalo, prioritising fishermen and families who have lost their income in Santiago Norte and other regions.

Speaking to the press at the end of her visit to the municipalities of Santa Cruz and São Miguel, Eveline Ramos stated that the Government is assessing the damage caused to the agriculture and fisheries sectors, with a view to mobilising resources to support the families affected.

According to the minister, losses were recorded in the agricultural sector, notably involving banana plants that were already at an advanced stage of production, as well as sugarcane crops and losses suffered by livestock farmers, due to the collapse of structures caused by the weather conditions.

“Some farmers have lost their banana trees, which were already at an advanced stage of production,” he explained, adding that losses had also been reported amongst livestock farmers, a situation which is believed to have affected families in both Santa Cruz and São Miguel.
