São Filipe, 25 Nov (Inforpress) – The first integrated study on Cabo Verde’s submarine mountains—their biodiversity, ecological functionality and socioeconomic relevance—is being presented Tuesday, 25 November, in Spain.

The study, published in the journal Progress in Oceanography, was conducted by an international team of more than 40 researchers led by Covadonga Orejas of IEO-CSIC (Spain), Veerle Huvenne of the UK’s National Oceanography Centre (NOC), and Jacob González-Solís, professor at the University of Barcelona (UB).

The integrated study reveals the “vital role” these seamounts play in biodiversity and in the sustainability of marine resources.

The review, led by IEO-CSIC, the UK’s NOC and UB, brings together previously scattered scientific knowledge and sets a benchmark for understanding these deep-sea ecosystems.
