São Filipe, May 23 (Inforpress) – The large fire that broke out this Thursday, 22, in the town of Cova Matinho, municipality of Santa Catarina, remains active and the council appeals for everyone's collaboration to try to minimize the situation.
The fire, which broke out at around 1.45pm, was fought on Thursday afternoon by the Santa Catarina municipal fire brigade with the support of local people and firefighters from Mosteiros. It raged throughout the night and the situation is considered alarming, with the flames advancing to higher ground and cultivated areas.
Pedro Andrade, an employee of the City Council of Santa Catarina do Fogo, linked to the Environment and Sanitation sector, contacted at around 7am today, said that the fire had already destroyed fruit trees, forest trees and vast areas of pasture.
The local authorities, through councillor Jacinto Gonçalves, in a post on social media, are making an ‘urgent appeal’ to the population and civil society to join the efforts to fight the flames, as all available human resources are being mobilised.
