Mindelo, Apr 24 (Inforpress) – Cabo Verde is recording cases of multiple myeloma above the international average, a type of cancer that has been increasing steadily, said today in Mindelo the clinical director of Baptista de Sousa Hospital.

Paulo Almeida stated that multiple myeloma, a haematological cancer within the field of haematology, was last year the third leading haematological cancer in Cabo Verde, demonstrating the growing relevance of the disease nationally.

For this reason, he stressed, Baptista de Sousa Hospital decided to hold the first symposium on “Multiple myeloma – challenges in diagnosis and treatment in Cabo Verde”.

“When we compare Cabo Verde with the global average, we find that the country has around 1.9 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, while the international average is 1.8. Although it may seem a small number, proportionally it is high,” he explained, adding that between 2024 and 2025, 27 new cases were recorded, in addition to existing ones.
