Brava: Farmers and livestock breeders are hopeful of a good agricultural year despite the lack of rain

Nova Sintra, August 21 (Inforpress) – Farmers and livestock breeders on Brava Island remain hopeful for a good agricultural year, despite the fact that rain has not yet arrived on the island, maintaining that precipitation may still come in time.

Speaking to Inforpress, Margarida Ribeiro, a farmer and breeder in the locality of Mato Riba, explained that the lack of rainfall prevents the sowing from starting, a situation aggravated by the presence of pests of wild chickens, which devour the seeds sown in the dry soil. 

"These chickens are picking up all the seeds that are put in the ground, so we're not doing it before we get the rain, otherwise it will be a wasted effort," the farmer explained.

Despite the approaching end of August, the farmer recalled that in previous years the rainfall had occurred later without compromising the harvests, and at this stage she chose to cultivate only the land adjacent to her residence, also due to the shortage of labor.
