Boa Vista: Cattle farmers in Rabil report the deaths of animals that have become trapped in wells abandoned by construction firms

Sal Rei, 28 August (Inforpress) – Cattle farmers in the Rabil area of Boa Vista reported on Thursday that animals had become trapped in open pits left by construction companies, and that there was a lack of heavy machinery on the island to clear the sites.

Speaking to the press, the farmer Maximiliano Fernandes “Djô Bento” claims that the excavations were likely carried out as part of infrastructure projects such as an airport and roads, and that the pits were left abandoned without any protection or maintenance, turning them into “death traps” where wild cows and donkeys become stuck in the mud whilst trying to drink water.

The farmer pointed out that the animals had always grazed in the area and had never had this problem before, but a nearby spring that has become blocked has also run dry, so they are now going to a spot that was never a spring, where they dug until water appeared. He also stated that if they hadn’t drawn water from that hole, they wouldn’t be facing this problem.

Djô Bento explained that City Council of Boa Vista had actually provided a piece of equipment, but it was of no use because the machine did not have the “adequate capacity” for the type of work required.
