
Praia, May 5 (Inforpress) – The Secretary-General of the United Nations today called for greater recognition of the Portuguese language as an instrument of global unity, highlighting its role in promoting dialogue, cultural diversity and understanding among peoples across different continents.
António Guterres used his message marking World Portuguese Language Day, observed on May 5, to stress the importance of Portuguese as a factor bringing cultures closer together in an international context marked by growing divisions.
In his statement, the official underlined that the language represents a shared space of belonging for millions of people across different geographies, strengthening historical, cultural and social ties.
Highlighting the global dimension of the language, the former Prime Minister of Portugal noted that Portuguese is spoken on several continents, thus constituting a true exercise in dialogue among peoples.
