Praia, April 13 (Inforpress) – The Movement for Democracy (MpD) is holding an international conference on Saturday, April 18, to commemorate the party's 36th anniversary, proposing "a serious reflection" on the current challenges to democracy on the African continent.
Under the topic “Democracy in Africa: elections, legitimacy and democratic trust”, the party’s vice-president, Luís Filipe Tavares, stated at a press conference in the city of Praia that the meeting also aims to critically examine the role of elections as the foundation of democratic legitimacy.
According to the politician, the initiative will bring together political leaders, academics, and national and international experts, with the aim of promoting reflection in a context marked by global transformations, institutional weakening, and loss of citizen confidence.
The program includes two central panels, the first dedicated to the limits and risks of electoral processes as the sole criterion of legitimacy, and the second focused on solutions for strengthening democratic trust, with emphasis on transparency, social inclusion, and opportunities for youth.
