Boa Vista: Residents complain about lack of support for sport and the neglect of neighbourhoods at the Municipal Council meeting

Sal Rei, 1 April (Inforpress) – The proceedings leading up to the agenda of the 4th Ordinary Session of the Boa Vista Municipal Assembly were marked today by complaints from residents regarding a lack of support for sports other than football and the neglect of neighbourhoods.

The sports and sanitation sectors were at the center of the demands. Resident and sports leader Nilton Tavares used his speech to question the "dominance" of football on the island, criticizing what he considers to be an abandonment of other sports such as athletics, basketball, martial arts, volleyball, among others.

“What are the criteria and methodologies for allocating subsidies? For volleyball, basketball, karate, judo, athletics, handball, there is nothing. We have been practically three seasons without concrete support,” stated Nilton Tavares, challenging the local authority to present answers for all associations and not just for football, which has received more attention and support.

He complained that the City Council had not even turned up to congratulate the RBS regional handball champions, who went on to represent the island at national level, and also expressed surprise that, as president of the athletics association, he had only learnt of the plans for a tartan track at a public event.
