Government calls for gender equity and merit-based recognition of women in the 2026 legislative elections

City of Praia, Mar 27 (Inforpress) – The Minister of Justice today highlighted the need to strengthen women’s participation in decision-making bodies and political party lists, as well as to value women’s skills and merit above favors or party affiliations.

Joana Rosa made these remarks to the press on the sidelines of the closing ceremony of Women’s Month activities, held at Central Prison of Praia, emphasizing the importance of equitable representation of women in all leadership bodies of political parties.

“My party has made internal efforts, but challenges remain that we, as women, must acknowledge and work to overcome,” she said, adding that women’s availability and active participation in decision-making bodies is essential.

The minister highlighted progress achieved since the 1990s, with increased female representation in sectors such as education, health, and the judiciary. However, she stressed the need to ensure equity across all areas, reinforcing that participation should be recognized based on merit and competencies, not favors.
