Mindelo, Mar 24 (Inforpress) – The United Nations Resident Coordinator in Cabo Verde advocated this Monday for the need to understand the origin of marine litter affecting Santa Luzia and to work through a multilateral and scientific approach to prevent this issue.
Patrícia Portela de Souza, who joined the President of the Republic’s delegation on a visit to the uninhabited island, stated she left the reserve “shocked and impressed” by the magnitude of accumulated waste.
The diplomat emphasized that, as a Small Island Developing State (SIDS), Cape Verde is particularly exposed to this “global concern.”
“We already have specific interventions from various United Nations agencies and programs, particularly on the scientific side, to understand the origin of this waste and how to work with nations in a coordinated manner to prevent debris from being discharged into the sea,” the coordinator explained, calling for a “strong” international agreement.
