ICIEG brings together magistrates to adapt the VBG law to practice and strengthen support for victims

City of Praia, 05 Mar (Inforpress) - The Cape Verdean Institute for Gender Equality and Equity (ICIEG) held today in Praia a strategic meeting with magistrates to prepare the revision of the VBG Law, aiming to address procedural delays and the high number of case dismissals.

The initiative, carried out in partnership with Spanish Cooperation, brought together judges and prosecutors from the Sotavento islands to identify constraints in legislation that celebrates its 15th anniversary this year.

In statements to the press, the president of ICIEG, Marisa Carvalho, explained that although the law is considered “well-crafted”, daily practice reveals obstacles in obtaining evidence and in the classification of the crime.

“Among the main concerns discussed are procedural delays, the high number of case dismissals, difficulties in obtaining evidence and the complexity involved in the classification of the crime itself,” stated Marisa Carvalho, indicating that the legislative revision will soon be submitted to parliament.
