São Vicente: UCID accuses Government of imposing controlled landfill when more sustainable solutions exist

Mindelo, Mar 03 (Inforpress) – The Union for an Independent and Democratic Cabo Verde (UCID) today accused the Government of “imposing the controlled landfill project” in São Vicente despite the fact that “there are other sustainable solutions, technically substantiated and designed for future generations”.

This criticism was voiced at a press conference by UCID Member of Parliament António Monteiro, who argued that structural issues such as waste management “cannot be treated as an instrument of electoral propaganda”.

He therefore questioned whether the implementation of the 70-million-escudo project announced by the Government constitutes a “mature technical decision strategically planned for the island” or a “measure presented in the heat of the electoral campaign to mislead the unwary”.

“São Vicente needs a structural solution for urban solid waste. A controlled landfill may represent an improvement compared to the situations we currently experience. However, it is essential to state clearly that a controlled landfill, in itself, is not a modern and definitive solution,” he stated.
