Praia, Jan 09 (Inforpress) – Cape Verdean language scholar Eleutério Afonso today called for extensive study, careful consideration and dialogue in the process of standardizing the Cape Verdean language, describing it as a complex and demanding undertaking.
Speaking to Inforpress on the second day of the 1st Seminar on the Translation of the New Testament into the Cape Verdean Language, Eleutério Afonso said that translating the Bible represents a text of great spiritual and cultural value for Cape Verdean society.
According to the researcher, who addressed the theme “The Necessary and Demanding Path of Language Standardization,” the process involves selecting linguistic variants that ensure comprehension and social stability.
As an example, he referred to words with different forms of use in Cape Verdean Creole, stressing that choosing a single variant may generate emotional impacts and difficulties in understanding.
